How does the MND Association spend its money?
A majority of the funds received by the MND Association is received as unrestricted funds. This means that the money goes into one big pot and is spent exactly where it is needed. However, funds raised can also be restricted to any one specific area if requested by the donor.
The vast majority of the funds raised is spent on their Care Services, which includes:
- Regional Care Advisers who ensure everyone affected by MND receives the best care and support possible
- Care Centres that enable a person living with MND to see all the specialists they need in one day, minimising the need to travel
- National Helpline to offer help, support, information and advice to anyone who needs it
- Equipment loan service for key items such as lightwriters (communications device) and rise recline chairs (to allow for better mobility)
- Training of Association Visitors who be-friend people affected by MND to broaden their support network
The second area where the MND Association spends the most is on research. They fund a number of research projects into the causes, treatments and ultimately a cure for MND, so that one day they can put an end to this dreadful disease.
The MND Association also invests in campaigning to government departments and raising awareness of MND. A very small percentage of their funds is spent in this area, however this is very important to ensure that they can continue their work. Last year the MND Association launched their biggest awareness campaign yet called John’s Journey – www.johnsjourney.org.
